In the Spotlight used to be a monthly e-bulletin. But co-operatives do so much good stuff that by the time the bulletin went out, the stories were old news. Hence this new blog. In the Spotlight is updated as soon as there's a story to tell or a co-operative hits the headlines.

DEFRA's blog on community owned shops

DEFRA's blog on a recent meeting with its Social Enterprise Strategic Partners - of which Co-operativesUK is one - features a discussion of the rising interest in and number of start-ups of community-owned shops in rural areas.

Simon Berry, writing the blog, puts the rise down to traditional prviate businesses struggling to keep going, particularly in difficult times, and the resilience of local communities who take over and run shops themselves in order to save vital services.
